The Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is a comprehensive, non-proprietary and publicly available set of guidelines for "best practice" in IT service management, owned by the British Office of Government Commerce (OGC). Each library module provides a code of practice intended to improve IT efficiencies, reduce risks and increase the effectiveness and quality of IT services management and infrastructure.
ITIL has recently undergone a refresh and the newly published ITIL v3 core books have adopted an integrated service lifecycle approach to IT Service Management.
Control Objectives for Information and related Technology (COBIT) is an IT governance framework and supporting toolset that allows managers to bridge the gap between control requirements, technical issues and business risks.
COBIT enables clear policy development and good practice for IT control throughout organizations.
COBIT emphasizes regulatory compliance, helps organizations to increase the value attained from IT, enables alignment and simplifies implementation of the COBIT framework.
Governing and managing IT services has become a major issue for the survival and the success of organizations, whether large, small, private business or in the public sector, and both for the customers and the suppliers of these services. Experts from internal and external suppliers of IT services from all over the world have contributed to develop an internationally recognized set of best practices, now commonly known as IT Service Management.
ISO/IEC20000 focuses upon the breadth of IT Service Management, where other standards focus upon subsets or at an enterprise level.
PRINCE2 (Projects In Controlled Environments) is a structured method for effective project management. Originally developed by the UK Government, it is widely recognised and used in the private sector, both in the UK and internationally.
It provides an easily modified and flexible method for the management of all types of projects - each process is defined with its key "inputs" and "outputs", together with the specific objectives and activities to be carried out within that process. Like many project management methods, PRINCE2 divides a project into manageable stages, which enables an efficient control of resources and regular progress monitoring throughout the project.
